Transition to School

Starting big school is a huge milestone for both a child and their family. We guide our families through this change with a comprehensive Transition process to ensure we assist with making this experience as smooth as possible.

Little Fisher’s Playgroup

As part of our Transition to school program we have Little Fisher’s Playgroup which is open to all non-school age children in the community and is designed to expose children to the school environment whilst engaging in some play-based learning.

You can register here to receive upcoming dates and information about Little Fisher’s Playgroup.

Resources For a Smooth Transition

Starting kindergarten is a new adventure for you and your child.  It is important that they are excited and proud to walk through the classroom door, ready to take their place in the ‘big kids’ school.

Our teachers and Catholic Schools Office of Broken Bay have developed a range of resources featuring some helpful tips to assist you in preparing your child at home for kindergarten.

Our My New School story will assist you in preparing your child for what to expect when they start Kindergarten at St John Fisher.

Our Getting Ready booklet outlines a range of learning tools, each supported by an educational video, that will assist in helping to develop the necessary skills in your child to ensure a successful start to their schooling. To see our school readiness video tools please click here.

How I learn Milestones

“Starting school involves a big change for your child and family. It can be a time of great excitement, but also a time of potential challenge and stress.

Families play an important role in supporting children to manage the transition to primary school. These resources will give you practical ideas and strategies to help your child make a successful start to school.

Thinking about transition to school is the first step to managing this transition smoothly. There are lots of simple things you can do to get your child ready for school. These include understanding their behaviour, as well as helping them develop the coping skills needed to best manage the change that comes with starting school. This can also be a great time to build your child’s problem solving abilities.

Don’t forget that having your child start school is a change for the whole family. As such, and it can often be a good idea to notice your own reaction and needs at this time. It is also important to not hesitate to get help when starting school when needed.”

Helping Kids Transition to School with NEW Resources

As children around NSW begin preparing for their transition to school, the NSW Government has developed new resources to support early childhood educators as they guide children in care services through this critical phase of their learning.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said the Government is committed to ensuring that all children across the state get the best start they can.

A storybook featuring native Australian animal characters, ‘Daisy’s First Day,’ has been developed to help children learn about what they might experience in a typical school day.
